  • (a) Apparatus. A schematic cutaway of the flight stage is shown.
  • (b) Cartoon of the right side of the fly's brain with VS cells highlighted in green.
  • (c) Immuno-amplified GFP signal in a fly expressing GFP driven by the Gal4-3a promoter (maximal z projection of a confocal stack). Only the lobula plate is shown. Scale bar represents 20 μm.
  • (d) Immuno-amplified GFP signal (green) and a recorded, biocytin-filled VS1 neuron (red; maximal z projection of a two-photon stack). Scale bar is approximately 20 μm.

PASADENA, Calif., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- U.S. scientists say they have obtained the first recordings of brain-cell activity from an actively flying fruit fly.
